What am I going to do with this child? This morning I received a call from the Asst. Pricipal's office. Penelope had to serve detention last Friday for tardies she had accummulated the prior several weeks. During the detention, an 8th grade girl was at her locker, unlocked it, got some things from it, left it ajar while she went into a classroom or bathroom briefly. This is what the tape from the video camera that was recently installed in this hallway showed. Then it showed Penelope walking down the hall, stopping at this girls open locker, Penelope reaching in, into this girl's backpack and pulling out her cell phone, then walking off. Penelope just stole this girl's cell phone!
The Asst Principal is telling me this and letting me know that he had just finished watching the tape. Penelope will be serving one in-school suspension day tomorrow. He also informed me that the parents of this student had called the police and filed a report. He doesn't know if they will be filing charges or not. He does have to call the police and let them know he knows who stole the phone.
I will be picking Penelope up from school. She doesn't get out until 4:00 today because she earned herself another detention for tardies last week.
Is she trying to go to jail?
She committed this crime Friday. She had a good weekend, I even took her bowling and we went for milkshakes, just her and I. She did all her chores, was relatively pleasant to be around. Is that glimness?

Wow, you sure have a lot on your plate! I hope the housing situation comes through for you.
Hey, as a side note, as a reader I'd just like to say that I enjoy reading your blog, but the yellow text on black background is really hard on the eyes. I don't know if you'd consider changing it, I know you picked it out, so you must like it, but it's just some feedback to consider. :)
Hopefully this new look is better on the eyes. Let me know :)
love it! It's very cheery, too! You rock.
Has the cell phone been returned?
We have the opposite problem. We keep finding electronics and phones and things on my son, but no one claims them. Therefore he gets no consequences for these "victimless" crimes, and of course, therefore sees no need to quit stealing. We think he's actually borrowing a lot of the stuff with no intention of returning it, but the child thinks it's borrowed so doesn't report it stolen.
Basically if she's not competent to stand trial, she's probably not competent to really understand the concept of stealing either. Our son has no impulse control. In our case we now have him escorted most places to remove temptations.
Hugs!!

Yes, the cell phone was located quickly after arriving home on Friday, the day I found out about the theft. It was a nice phone and can see why she was tempted. She claimed to not use it or even turn it on because "they can track you down that way." Watching NCIS and the bad guys always getting caught has paid off in this regard. However, her statement contridicts her other statement of "I didn't know it was against the law to steal." Yeah right.
I did turn on the phone and check to see if she had used it or took any pictures with it. It had a full battery, no recent pictures and no calls since before Friday. I turned it off and held on to it.
I haven't heard from the police or the family. I don't even know who the family is. Hopefully, since it was returned unused and undamaged a few days later, they will not press charges - but if they do, it's a consequence she will have to deal with. I told her "Penelope, when you break the law and the police and courts get involved, there isn't anything I can do. You break the law, you have to deal with the consequences. You will have to do whatever they say. Is that what you want?" Of course her answer was "No!" She said she knew it was wrong but didn't think she'd get into this much trouble, would just get yelled at and have to return it.
We have the same problem that you have with Bear. Until this event she has never been caught and we really didn't know who the items belonged to. Off and on, she will come home with things that she claimed as "gifts" from a friend. This is a girl who claims she doesn't have any friends or has shaky relationships with girls but they adore her so much to give her nice things like a fancy fashion pen? I think not. The other big thing is "I found it" on the sidewalk at school/in the hallway at school/ outside in the yard. She found and IPod once. I told her she had turn it in but then she misplaced it and couldn't turn it in. I couldn't find it. I told her teacher but no one claimed to be missing one. What do you do? I'm glad she was busted. But do not look forward to any more court stuff.
